I remember reading through forum posts a decade ago about this, but especially since Mythbusters covered it, I thought this discussion was dead. That is until I overheard a couple guys arguing at the grocery store about it. Crazy.
I remember getting into incredibly heated debates on Jeep Forum (of all places) about this until I was blue in the face and steaming. "The wheels are free spinning, the plane doesn't care what the ground is doing! It operates on thrust against the air, not the wheels on the ground!"

The plane doesn't care what the treadmill does. The plane will soar right off the treadmill.
Interesting topic of discussion though, even though it's lopsided. I should bring this up with my dad and see how quickly he agrees with me.

I was there... at ground zero of this epic debate. It was the a glorious time to be on the internet.

Raw, burning feelings of helplessness and frustration as nothing I could say would possibly change these people's minds.
Oddly enough, the most recent example of another thing making me feel that similar thought of "HOW THE FUCK CAN THEY THINK THIS" is that stupid debate about of the color of that ugly dress. I know, it was stupid and I can't believe I let myself get caught up in it but HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU SEE WHITE AND GOLD?!?!?!? :"kg;ah sldjkgasl dfgjkhgaj sdgfalisghakjhg;a;f lkndafham,fg;ahsdn ;ASJH BGLisdg ;KDSG ;sdgnD'GglNDSG;"

Of course they're different, I just meant the feeling while arguing, not the basis of each. What I meant was, equal levels of "how the..."

I suggest that we form a government committee to look into the feasibility of this idiotic concept. We'll consult the top scientists in the field and require that they provide the American taxpayer a full report by the next election year.

What a bunch of dummies! Everyone knows you need to put a magnet in the nose and then another magnet on a long pole in front of it.

It was a thread back when Something Awful used to have 3500 people browsing the forums at one time. (kinda like Redit now I guess). I happened to be on at the time and enjoyed following the debate. It was hard to keep up when you hit F5 and you'd get 30 new replies.

I fully intended to use this as a question when interviewing potential employees when that time arises....people that cannot grasp "thurst>bearing friction" have some kind of faulty neuron pathways
